What this trial studies

This study investigates the connection between periodontitis, a severe gum disease, and changes in gut microbiota. It aims to understand how periodontal treatment, specifically full-mouth scaling and root planing, may affect the microbial profiles in the mouth and gut. A total of 70 patients with advanced periodontitis will be recruited, and samples of saliva, subgingival plaque, plasma, and stool will be collected before and after treatment to analyze changes in microbial composition and function. The study seeks to establish a correlation between oral health and gut microbiome alterations.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults with stage III or IV periodontitis who have a BMI between 20 and 29 and at least 20 teeth.

Not a fit: Patients with systemic diseases, dietary allergies, or those who have used antibiotics or probiotics recently may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved treatment strategies for periodontitis and its systemic effects by highlighting the importance of oral-gut health.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study may be novel, there is growing interest in the relationship between oral health and gut microbiota, with some studies suggesting potential benefits.
