Analyzing left atrial characteristics in patients at risk for atrial fibrillation

Characterization of Left Atrial Substrate in Patients With Ventricular Arrhythmias

Observational Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel · NCT06425822

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to analyze the electroanatomical maps of the left atrium in patients who are at high risk for developing atrial fibrillation but do not have a prior history of the condition. It will compare these patients to a historical cohort with diagnosed atrial fibrillation to determine if the observed changes in the left atrium are precursors to the condition. The study will also evaluate the prognostic significance of these electroanatomical changes on cardiovascular outcomes. The findings could help clarify the relationship between structural heart disease and atrial fibrillation development.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients with structural heart disease or a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 2 or higher, who have not previously experienced atrial fibrillation.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of atrial fibrillation or flutter, or those with thrombus in the left atrial appendage, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better risk stratification and management strategies for patients at high risk of developing atrial fibrillation.

How similar studies have performed: While this approach is observational and may have similarities to other studies, it specifically targets a unique cohort and aims to clarify the relationship between left atrial changes and atrial fibrillation risk, making it a novel investigation.
