Anabolic response to IV amino acids in people with chronic intestinal failure

Anabolic Response To Protein And Assessment Of Metabolic Phenotype In Patients With Home Parenteral Nutrition And Chronic Intestinal Failure

Not applicable Interventional Institute of Oncology Ljubljana · NCT07422792

What this trial studies

This prospective cohort study gives intravenous amino acids to patients with chronic intestinal failure who are receiving home parenteral nutrition and measures their anabolic (protein-building) response. Researchers will measure protein kinetics and metabolic phenotype to estimate true protein requirements and inform personalization of parenteral nutrition mixtures. The protocol also includes analysis of short-chain fatty acid metabolism and gut microbiota function to explore links between microbial activity and host metabolism. Data aim to improve nutritional management and dosing precision for people with CIF.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults with chronic intestinal failure who are receiving home parenteral nutrition are the intended participants.

Not a fit: People who are not on home parenteral nutrition or who cannot undergo metabolic testing likely would not receive direct benefit from this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help clinicians tailor parenteral nutrition protein content to individual needs, improving protein status and clinical management.

How similar studies have performed: Metabolic and amino acid infusion studies have shown useful protein-kinetic data in other groups, but applying detailed protein-kinetic measurements specifically to chronic intestinal failure patients on home parenteral nutrition is relatively novel.
