AI screening tool using WhatsApp to predict genetic risk for breast cancer
Screening Tool Artificial Intelligence-based for Predicting the Genetic Risk of BREAST Cancer (STAR-BREAST)
This project will test whether an AI-based WhatsApp virtual assistant can use family cancer history to predict which women referred for genetic evaluation have higher genetic risk for breast cancer.

What this trial studies
This retrospective observational study will review medical records of women aged 18 and older, identified by breast specialists as at high genetic risk and referred to a geneticist, from 2017–2024. Eligible patients at two Brazilian centers will be asked to provide family cancer history via an AI virtual assistant developed by WeConecta on WhatsApp. The AI tool's risk predictions will be compared to documented genetic testing results and specialist evaluations. The coordinating site is the Breast Center at Hospital Moinhos de Vento in Porto Alegre, with supporting data from the Human Genetics Center (CEGH/ICB) at the Federal University of Goiás in Goiânia.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Women aged 18 or older who were identified by breast surgeons as at high genetic risk, referred to a geneticist, have adequate medical records, and agree to participate.
Not a fit: Male patients, people lacking complete medical records, those who do not know their biological family history, or those not referred for genetic evaluation are unlikely to benefit from this effort.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this tool could speed up identification of women with hereditary breast cancer risk and help prioritize referrals to genetic services.
How similar studies have performed: Digital family-history collection tools and established risk models have shown promise for flagging high-risk individuals, but using an AI WhatsApp assistant specifically to predict genetic breast cancer risk is relatively new and not yet widely validated.
