What this trial studies

This study investigates the effects of aerobic exercise training on motor and respiratory functions, exercise capacity, fatigue, and quality of life in patients with Type III Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) who are able to walk and are receiving Nusinersen therapy. It aims to include twenty patients aged 10-50 years with a confirmed genetic diagnosis of SMA. The study will assess how structured aerobic exercise impacts their overall health and well-being. Previous research suggests that exercise may enhance motor neuron survival and improve physical functioning without causing muscle damage.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 10-50 with a genetically confirmed diagnosis of SMA Type III who can walk independently.

Not a fit: Patients who are using other SMA treatments besides Nusinersen or those with serious systemic diseases may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the quality of life and physical capabilities of patients with Type III SMA.

How similar studies have performed: While some previous studies have shown positive effects of exercise in SMA patients, this specific approach combining aerobic training with Nusinersen therapy is relatively novel.
