Adapt the HealthMindr app to boost HIV testing and PrEP use among young men who have sex with men in Vietnam
Adapting An Evidence-Based Intervention To Improve HIV Testing And PrEP Uptake In Vietnam
This project will try a Vietnamese-adapted HealthMindr mobile app to see if it increases HIV testing and PrEP uptake among 18–24-year-old men who have sex with men living in Hanoi.

What this trial studies
The team will adapt the evidence-based HealthMindr mHealth app for cultural and language fit with young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in Vietnam, using theater testing and beta testing to refine content and features. After adaptation, they will run a randomized controlled pilot in Hanoi to measure acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary effects on HIV testing and PrEP initiation. The intervention targets HIV-negative or unknown-status YMSM aged 18–24 who own smartphones and read Vietnamese. Researchers will also interview stakeholders to identify barriers and facilitators to implementing the app more broadly.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are 18–24-year-old Vietnamese males who have had anal sex with another man in the past 6 months, are HIV-negative or of unknown status, live in Hanoi, own a smartphone, read Vietnamese, and (for the RCT) are not currently on PrEP.
Not a fit: People who are HIV-positive, already taking PrEP, do not live in Hanoi, lack a smartphone, cannot read Vietnamese, or are older than 24 are unlikely to benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the adapted app could increase timely HIV testing and PrEP uptake among young men who have sex with men, lowering new infections and improving early diagnosis.
How similar studies have performed: HealthMindr is an evidence-based app that has shown positive results in the United States and mHealth approaches have increased testing and PrEP uptake in some settings, but adaptation and effectiveness among Vietnamese YMSM remain relatively untested.
Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Young men who have sex with men (YMSM): Theater testing. YMSM are eligible if they (1) are 18-24 years old Vietnamese male; (2) report having anal intercourse with another man in the last 6 months; (3) are HIV negative or of unknown HIV status; (4) own a smartphone; (5) currently live in Hanoi, (6) are able to read and understand Vietnamese without assistance, and (7) are willing to provide informed consent. Beta testing. Eligibility is similar to theater testing. Randomized controlled trial (RCT). YMSM are eligible if they (1) are 18-24 years old Vietnamese male; (2) report having anal intercourse with another man in the last 6 months; (3) are HIV negative or of unknown HIV status; (4) own a smartphone; (5) currently live in Hanoi, (6) are able to read and understand Vietnamese without assistance, and (7) are willing to provide informed consent and (8) are not being currently on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). * Other key stakeholders: Eligibility criteria of this group are (1) having worked with MSM-related health issues at an HIV/PrEP clinic or community-based organizations (CBO) for at least 6 months and (2) willingness to provide informed consent. Exclusion Criteria: * Young men who have sex with men (YMSM): Theater testing. None Beta testing. Participants will be deemed ineligible if they are unwilling to provide contact information. Randomized controlled trial. Exclusion criteria include (1) unwilling to provide contact information; (2) currently enrolled in other HIV testing or PrEP program/intervention. * Other key stakeholders: None
