What this trial studies
The CHORUS+ initiative aims to improve the uptake and adherence to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and the continuation of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) among individuals who inject opioids. This intervention utilizes a peer-delivered, mobile phone-supported approach that includes HIV self-testing and rapid initiation of PrEP. By addressing the barriers to accessing these critical health services, the study seeks to enhance health outcomes for this vulnerable population. Participants will be recruited from the Boston area and will receive support through motivational interviewing and peer recovery coaching.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals who have injected opioids in the past six months and are at risk for HIV.
Not a fit: Patients who are already living with HIV or are pregnant may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly reduce the risk of HIV transmission and improve treatment adherence for individuals with opioid use disorder.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using peer-delivered interventions to improve health outcomes in similar populations, suggesting a promising approach.
