What this trial studies
This project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a parent-only obesity intervention followed by a family-based program compared to a family-based program alone. The study will assess weight loss outcomes, dietary intake, physical activity, and weight-related quality of life among participating families. Parent-child dyads will be recruited from rural elementary schools and medical clinics across Kansas and neighboring states to participate in the program. The interventions include the iAmHealthy Parents First program and the iAmHealthy program.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include rural families with a child aged 6-11 years who are overweight and a parent with a BMI between 25-50.
Not a fit: Patients who have had recent serious medical conditions or surgeries, or who are not available during the intervention times, may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could lead to significant weight loss and improved health outcomes for both parents and children in rural communities.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with family-based obesity interventions, indicating potential for positive outcomes in this approach.
