What this trial studies
This clinical trial tests a new approach to weight loss that combines standard weight loss strategies with self-compassion exercises for overweight adults who experience internalized weight bias. Over a 12-week period, participants will engage in weekly sessions conducted via videoconferencing, focusing on both weight loss and reducing negative self-perceptions related to weight. The program is modeled after the Diabetes Prevention Program and incorporates Kristen Neff's self-compassion intervention. The goal is to determine if this combined approach can lead to significant weight loss and a decrease in internalized weight bias.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are overweight adults aged 18 and older with a BMI of 25 or higher and moderate to high levels of internalized weight bias.
Not a fit: Patients with uncontrolled medical conditions, recent cardiovascular events, or those currently on weight loss medications may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could provide a holistic approach to weight loss that not only helps individuals lose weight but also improves their self-esteem and mental health.
How similar studies have performed: While the combination of self-compassion and weight loss interventions is relatively novel, similar studies have shown promise in addressing weight bias and improving mental health outcomes.
