A new system to improve care for hospitalized patients with cirrhosis
Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial to Evaluate the Effect of CirrhosisRx, a Novel Clinical Decision Support System, on Guideline-adherence and Clinical Outcomes for Patients With Cirrhosis
This study is testing a new support system called CirrhosisRx to see if it can help doctors provide better care for hospitalized patients with cirrhosis compared to regular treatment.

What this trial studies
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of CirrhosisRx, a clinical decision support system designed specifically for inpatient care of cirrhosis patients, compared to standard care practices. With over 200,000 hospitalizations for cirrhosis annually in the U.S., and significant rates of readmission and mortality, the study seeks to determine if the CirrhosisRx system can enhance adherence to national quality measures and improve clinical outcomes. The approach involves a pragmatic randomized controlled trial where treatment teams will be randomly assigned to use either the CirrhosisRx system or continue with usual care. This innovative method addresses existing gaps in cirrhosis management and aims to provide evidence on the effectiveness of CDS systems in this context.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adult patients aged 18 and older with a history of cirrhosis as defined by specific diagnostic codes.
Not a fit: Patients who are under 18 years old or do not meet the cirrhosis definition criteria will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this system could significantly improve the quality of care and outcomes for hospitalized patients with cirrhosis.
How similar studies have performed: While clinical decision support systems have shown promise in other areas of healthcare, their application in cirrhosis care remains largely untested, making this approach novel.
