30-day outcomes for cancer patients treated in specialist versus non-specialist emergency departments

Comparison of 30-day Morbidity and Mortality in Cancer Patients Based on Emergency Department Location: Referring Oncology Hospital vs Other Hospitals.

Observational Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris · NCT06834646

This study will see if adults with active cancer or cancer remission within the past year who go to a specialist cancer emergency department have different 30-day death and complication rates compared with those who go to non-specialist emergency departments.

What this trial studies

This is an observational cohort comparison of adults with active cancer or cancer in remission for less than one year who present to an emergency department. Investigators will record the ED location (specialist cancer ED versus non-specialist ED), access to oncology records, presenting severity, treatments given, and 30-day outcomes including complications and mortality. Outcomes will be compared between groups using statistical adjustment for baseline illness severity and treatment factors. No interventional procedures are performed as part of the protocol.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older with active cancer or cancer in remission for less than one year who present to an emergency department and consent to record use are the intended participants.

Not a fit: Patients under 18, those whose cancer has been in remission for more than one year, or individuals who withhold consent are unlikely to benefit from enrollment in this observational project.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If specialist ED care is linked to better 30-day outcomes, the findings could promote referral pathways or shared-care processes that reduce short-term complications and deaths for cancer patients.

How similar studies have performed: Prior work has suggested that cancer-center expertise can improve care quality and prognosis, but direct comparisons of 30-day morbidity and mortality by ED location are limited.
