Understanding how care decisions affect outcomes for patients with breathing problems and sepsis
Identifying patient subgroups and processes of care that cause outcome differences following ICU vs. ward triage among patients with acute respiratory failure and sepsis

What this research studies
We know that where patients with acute respiratory failure and sepsis are treated—either in an intensive care unit (ICU) or a regular hospital ward—can greatly impact their health. This project will analyze a vast amount of patient health record data from many hospitalizations to identify specific groups of patients and care practices that lead to better or worse outcomes. By understanding these differences, we hope to improve how these critical decisions are made. Our goal is to help ensure patients receive the most appropriate care for their condition.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: This project focuses on understanding past care for patients who have experienced acute respiratory failure and sepsis.
Not a fit: Patients who have not experienced acute respiratory failure or sepsis would not directly benefit from this specific research.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this work could lead to more informed decisions about where patients with acute respiratory failure and sepsis receive care, potentially improving their chances of recovery and reducing complications.
How similar studies have performed: Prior work by this team has already shown that initial care decisions significantly impact patient outcomes, suggesting a strong foundation for this expanded analysis.
