Predicting heart disease risk in young male veterans with erectile dysfunction
Polygenic Risk Stratification for Cardiovascular Disease in Young Male Veterans presenting with Erectile Dysfunction
['FUNDING_OTHER'] · VA SAN DIEGO HEALTHCARE SYSTEM · NIH-11206878

What this research studies
You and other veterans with erectile dysfunction would have your VA health records and genetic data reviewed to see how other medical conditions group together with ED. Researchers will group men with ED into subtypes based on other health problems using clustering of big data from the Million Veterans Program. They will use genetic studies and polygenic risk scores, plus Mendelian randomization methods, to explore whether traits like diabetes or depression help cause both ED and heart disease. The goal is to build a genetics-informed tool to better predict who needs stronger heart-protecting care.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Young male U.S. veterans with erectile dysfunction, especially those enrolled in the Million Veterans Program or receiving care in the VA system, are the ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Women, non-veterans, people without ED, or individuals without VA medical records or genetic data are unlikely to be included or to get direct benefit from this work.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: Could help identify which men with ED should get earlier or more intensive heart disease prevention to lower their risk of heart attacks.
How similar studies have performed: Genetic risk scores and GWAS have helped predict cardiovascular risk in other groups, but applying clustering and causal genetic methods specifically to men with ED is a newer approach.
