What this research studies

The University of Iowa is running a regional coordinating stroke center that connects comprehensive stroke centers and smaller hospitals to support multi-site clinical trials. The network builds local capacity by training staff, streamlining patient recruitment, and managing trial logistics across the Upper Midwest. By addressing geographic barriers and using the UI's long history in stroke research, the network aims to expand who can participate in trials and speed up testing of new prevention and recovery approaches. The UIRCC will continue partnering with NIH StrokeNet to bring more high-quality stroke trials to the region.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: People who have recently had a stroke, are recovering from a stroke, or are at high risk for stroke and receive care at participating hospitals in Iowa and nearby states are the best candidates.

Not a fit: Patients who live outside the Upper Midwest, cannot travel to participating centers, or do not meet specific medical criteria for individual trials may not be able to participate or benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, more patients in Iowa and the Upper Midwest could gain faster access to new stroke prevention, treatment, and recovery options through clinical trials.

How similar studies have performed: This network builds on proven models—NIH StrokeNet and the University of Iowa have successfully run major trials before, and UI was a top enroller in DEFUSE-3.
