Investigating cholesterol reduction and heart disease risk in Type 1 diabetes
Cholesterol reduction and cardiovascular risk in Type 1 diabetes
['FUNDING_R01'] · NEW YORK UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE · NIH-10899673
This study is looking at how lowering LDL cholesterol can help heart health in people with Type 1 diabetes, and it’s inviting participants from different communities in New York City to try out cholesterol-lowering treatments for four weeks to see how their bodies respond.

What this research studies
This research focuses on understanding how reducing LDL cholesterol levels can impact cardiovascular health in patients with Type 1 diabetes. It aims to identify the biological pathways that are affected by cholesterol reduction and how these pathways can be targeted to improve vascular repair and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. Patients will receive cholesterol-lowering treatments for four weeks, and their responses will be monitored through changes in blood cells and inflammatory markers. The study will recruit participants from diverse communities in New York City, ensuring a broad representation of patients.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this research are individuals diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes who are at risk for cardiovascular disease.
Not a fit: Patients without Type 1 diabetes or those who do not have elevated LDL cholesterol levels may not benefit from this research.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this research could lead to improved strategies for preventing heart disease in individuals with Type 1 diabetes.
How similar studies have performed: Previous research has shown that cholesterol reduction can improve cardiovascular outcomes in non-diabetic populations, but this approach in Type 1 diabetes is still being explored.
