Helping families find early mental health support for children

Assisted Identification and Navigation of Early Mental Health Symptoms in Children

['FUNDING_R01'] · KAISER FOUNDATION RESEARCH INSTITUTE · NIH-10746793

This study is looking at a new way to help kids who might be showing early signs of mental health challenges by using health records to find those who need support, and then providing their families with a friendly guide for six months to help them get the care they need, while comparing their progress to families who are getting regular care.

What this research studies

This research investigates a new approach to identify and support children showing early signs of mental health issues. It uses a predictive model to analyze health records and identify children who may need help but haven't yet received a diagnosis or treatment. Families of these children will receive support from a mental health navigator for six months to help them access necessary services. The study will take place in two healthcare systems, comparing the outcomes of families receiving this support to those receiving standard care.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this research are children aged 0-21 who show early signs of mental health symptoms but have not yet received a diagnosis or treatment.

Not a fit: Patients who have already been diagnosed with a mental health disorder and are receiving treatment may not benefit from this research.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this research could lead to earlier identification and treatment of mental health issues in children, improving their overall well-being.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has shown that early intervention models can significantly improve mental health outcomes for children, suggesting this approach may be effective.
