Work-related sun exposure and skin melanoma in the Modena area
Melanoma of the Skin and Exposure to Solar Ultraviolet Radiation at Work in Modena Territory: a Case-control Study to Promote an Active Search and Prevention of Occupational Diseases Based on Recent INAIL Criteria
University of Modena and Reggio Emilia · NCT07251335

What this trial studies
This is a monocentric, observational case-control project at the Dermatology Clinic of the University Hospital of Modena that enrolls adults undergoing skin biopsy for a suspected melanoma. Participants complete a one-time interview about job history, specific work locations, and sun exposure habits to estimate lifetime occupational and recreational UV radiation exposure. Researchers will classify melanoma subtypes by cumulative solar damage and apply recent INAIL criteria to determine whether certain melanomas can be reported as occupational diseases. The study aims to clarify the link between long-term outdoor work and CSD-associated melanomas and to inform prevention and reporting practices for outdoor workers.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (18+) who are patients at the Modena University Hospital Dermatology Clinic undergoing biopsy for a suspected skin lesion and able to give informed consent in Italian.
Not a fit: People under 18, patients with cognitive impairments that prevent reliable interviews, or people not treated at the Modena clinic are not eligible and unlikely to benefit directly.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, findings could help identify melanomas caused by long-term occupational sun exposure, improve reporting for workers' compensation, and guide prevention efforts for outdoor workers.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies and a WHO/ILO meta-analysis found an increased risk of cumulative-sun-damage-related melanoma with outdoor work but overall evidence is mixed, and applying recent INAIL criteria in this local population is a relatively new approach.
