What factors affect pregnancy success after IUI

Factors Associated With Clinical Pregnancy Outcomes in Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Cycles

Observational Chinese University of Hong Kong · NCT07344623

This project will try to see if hormone levels on trigger day, follicle and uterine measurements, and sperm quality are linked to the chance of a clinical pregnancy after IUI for couples who had IUI cycles.

What this trial studies

This is a retrospective analysis of approximately 3,000 intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles performed at the Chinese University of Hong Kong using existing clinical records. The study examines hormone measurements (LH, estradiol, progesterone) on trigger day, follicular response, endometrial thickness, and sperm parameters as predictors of clinical pregnancy (gestational sac with fetal heartbeat). Statistical methods include univariate and multivariate logistic regression, mediation and interaction analyses, ROC/AUC performance, and machine-learning model development with internal validation. The protocol also compares natural versus gonadotropin-stimulated IUI cycles and examines incremental cost per clinical pregnancy.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are couples who underwent at least one IUI cycle using their own sperm and have complete clinical and laboratory records available at the center.

Not a fit: Patients who used donor sperm, who lack core outcome data, or whose infertility is managed primarily by IVF rather than IUI are unlikely to benefit from the study's findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the results could help predict which couples are most likely to achieve a clinical pregnancy after IUI and guide more personalized, cost-conscious treatment choices.

How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies have identified links between hormones, endometrial factors, sperm quality and IUI outcomes, but comprehensive predictive models with machine learning and formal cost-effectiveness comparisons are relatively uncommon.
