Wearable chest patch that monitors heart mechanics for people with heart failure

Seismocardiographic Monitoring in Heart Failure

Observational Aalborg University · NCT06885164

This project will try a small wearable chest patch that records heart movement (seismocardiography) and ECG to see if it can detect early worsening in adults with NYHA class II–IV heart failure.

What this trial studies

This observational project will collect 30 days of brief hourly seismocardiography (SCG) and electrocardiography (ECG) recordings from participants wearing a small sensor on the sternum. Adults aged 18–90 with NYHA class II–IV heart failure will wear the patch after discharge or a clinic visit, complete questionnaires at the start and end, and undergo echocardiography on both visits. Sensor-derived SCG/ECG parameters will be analyzed alongside echocardiography, total blood volume estimates, medication changes, and hospitalizations. The aim is to see whether external sensor signals correlate with mechanical and clinical changes and whether early alterations can be detected.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults 18–90 years old with NYHA class II–IV heart failure who can wear a small chest sensor and attend two clinic visits are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with mechanical heart valves, those on dialysis, pregnant people, individuals unable to cooperate, or those whose chest anatomy prevents good SCG/ECG recordings are less likely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could enable a low-cost, noninvasive way to detect worsening heart failure earlier and prompt medication adjustments that reduce hospital admissions.

How similar studies have performed: Implanted pulmonary artery pressure sensors have demonstrated benefit in heart failure management, but using an external SCG plus ECG patch is a novel and largely untested approach.
