We-Move With Windy: building gross motor skills in preschoolers

Pediatric Physical Activity: Tailored Intervention for Children Born to Mothers With Obesity

Not applicable Interventional Arkansas Children's Hospital Research Institute · NCT07346300

This trial will test a family-based, home-friendly activity program for families with preschoolers (ages 3–5) whose mothers have obesity to see if it helps children move better and improve early health.

What this trial studies

This is a randomized trial enrolling up to 266 mother–child pairs, with half randomized to receive the We-Move With Windy physical activity program and half assigned to a comparison group. The intervention delivers developmentally tailored, fun movement activities for children together with practical support for mothers and reinforcement of healthy eating. The team completed formative work including a needs assessment, small feasibility tests, and an 18-week pilot randomized trial to refine content and delivery. Outcomes include feasibility and acceptability as well as measures of children's gross motor development, physical activity, and related health indicators.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are mother–child pairs where the mother has a BMI over 30 and the child is between 3 and 5 years old, with no medical restrictions on exercise.

Not a fit: Families where the mother or child have medical reasons to avoid exercise, children outside the 3–5 year age range, or mothers with BMI ≤30 are unlikely to benefit from this specific program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could improve preschoolers' gross motor skills and increase everyday physical activity, potentially lowering early-life cardiometabolic risk.

How similar studies have performed: The team completed pilot phases of this same program showing feasibility and acceptability, and other family-based movement interventions have shown promise for improving preschool motor skills though large definitive trials remain limited.
