What this trial studies
This study aims to develop and validate a Virtual Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia Simulator (VLaHHS) to enhance the training of General Surgery residents. It involves a needs assessment survey to identify current practices, followed by the creation of training scenarios and metrics for the simulator. The study will assess the simulator's validity through three phases, including face and content validity, discriminant validity, and predictive validity by comparing trained residents with a control group. The training phase will consist of hands-on practice with the simulator over a maximum of three weeks.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are General Surgery residents who are currently in training.
Not a fit: Patients who are not General Surgery residents or those who are not in residency training will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this simulator could significantly improve the surgical training and skills of General Surgery residents, leading to better patient outcomes in laparoscopic hiatal hernia repairs.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with similar virtual training approaches in surgical education, indicating a promising avenue for skill development.
