What this trial studies
This study evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of a virtual rehabilitation program designed for children aged 8 to 23 years who are recovering from hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and may be experiencing chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). The program aims to enhance physical fitness and improve quality of life by providing supervised virtual exercise sessions, overcoming barriers such as travel distance and infection risk. Participants will be assessed by a pediatric physical therapist at the start and end of the program to measure improvements in physical functioning and overall well-being. The study seeks to establish a model that could be adopted by other institutions for similar patient populations.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 8 to 23 years who are at least 100 days post-allogeneic HCT and cleared for exercise by their physician.
Not a fit: Patients with physical impediments to exercise or those who do not speak English may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly improve physical functioning and quality of life for children recovering from HCT.
How similar studies have performed: While virtual rehabilitation has shown success in cardiac transplant patients, this approach for pediatric HCT patients is novel and untested.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Recipients between the ages of 8 and 23 years ≥100 days post allogeneic HCT. * Patients 8-14 years old should have a caregiver willing to assist with the implementation of the exercises during the session * Patients should have access to devices and a reliable internet connection. * Patients should be cleared for exercise by their physician * Patients are eligible to participate regardless of underlying diagnosis, preparative regimen, or graft source. Exclusion Criteria: * Any physical impediment to exercise as evaluated by the treating physician. * Non-English-speaking patients (due to a lack of available interpreters through the telemedicine platform).
