Virtual reality with hypnotic scenes to ease hygiene care for people with Alzheimer’s
Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Virtual Reality Headsets With Hypnotic Scenarios for Hygiene Care in Patients With Alzheimer's Disease or Related Disorders (ADRD) With Behavioral Disturbances
NA · Centre Hospitalier Universitaire, Amiens · NCT07264439

What this trial studies
This single-center interventional project compares a virtual reality headset delivering hypnotic scenarios with standard care during hygiene and toileting in residents who show agitation or opposition. Participants are residents of the St‑Victor center (CHU Amiens‑Picardie) and will receive the VR intervention during care episodes, with feasibility and behavioral responses recorded. Inclusion requires informed consent from the patient or a legal representative, and patients in terminal palliative care are excluded. The primary objective is to test feasibility and effectiveness of the VR intervention compared with standard care.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are residents of the St‑Victor center diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or related disorders who exhibit agitation or opposition during hygiene or toileting care and can provide consent or have a legal representative to consent.
Not a fit: Patients in terminal palliative care or those unable to tolerate or wear a VR headset (for example due to severe sensory impairment) are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the approach could reduce anxiety and resistance during personal care, making hygiene safer and more comfortable for patients and easier for caregivers.
How similar studies have performed: Previous small trials and pilot studies suggest VR can reduce agitation or anxiety in people with dementia, but using hypnotic scenarios specifically during hygiene care is relatively novel.
