What this trial studies
Participants will use immersive virtual reality with a head-mounted display combined with aerobic and strength training in tailored simulation sessions designed to practice complex movements and boost engagement. The sessions target motor function, balance, pain distraction, and cognitive stimulation to promote neuroplasticity and greater independence. The intervention is delivered at Asociación El Saliente in Almería and enrolls adults who consent to participate, excluding those with severe visual impairment, vertigo, epilepsy, or psychosis. Outcomes include functional mobility, strength, pain, anxiety, and quality of life measured over the intervention period.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (18+) with dependency who can provide informed consent and tolerate a virtual-reality headset are the intended participants.
Not a fit: People with severe visual impairment, vertigo, epilepsy, psychosis, or those unable to use a head-mounted display or perform the exercise components are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the approach could improve motor function, reduce pain and anxiety, and increase autonomy and emotional well-being for people with dependency.
How similar studies have performed: Prior smaller studies and reviews have reported that VR can improve balance, muscle activity, cognition, and mood in older or dependent populations, although large definitive trials remain limited.
