Virtual reality during rigid cystoscopy

Effect of Virtual Reality Application on Pain, Anxiety and Patient Satisfaction During Cystoscopy: A Randomized Controlled Trial

NA · Ankara Medipol University · NCT07017660

What this trial studies

This randomized controlled experiment compares wearing virtual reality (VR) glasses showing nature scenes with water and bird sounds to no VR during rigid cystoscopy under local anesthesia. Pain is measured with a Visual Analog Scale and anxiety with the State Anxiety Scale 10 minutes before and 10 minutes after the procedure; satisfaction is measured 10 minutes after. Participants in the VR arm put on the glasses three minutes before the procedure and keep them on until completion while routine institutional cystoscopy procedures are performed. The study enrolls adults able to communicate in Turkish and excludes those with sensory/perception problems, recent analgesic or sedative use, certain procedural manipulations, or contraindications to the procedure.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older undergoing their first elective rigid cystoscopy under local anesthesia who have normal vision/hearing, can speak Turkish, and agree to wear VR glasses.

Not a fit: Patients with vision, hearing, or perception deficits, those who received analgesic or sedative medications within 4 hours, or those undergoing stent manipulation or bladder biopsy are unlikely to benefit from the VR intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could reduce pain and anxiety during cystoscopy and improve patient comfort without adding medications.

How similar studies have performed: Some smaller randomized trials and reviews of VR for minor medical procedures have shown reduced pain and anxiety, including limited evidence in cystoscopy, but the overall evidence base remains modest.
