What this trial studies
Adults scheduled for outpatient colonoscopy who have not previously undergone the procedure will receive video-based education about dietary restrictions and laxative use delivered via a smartphone application. The intervention group will watch the video prior to their procedure and outcomes will be compared to standard preparation instructions. Study staff will record bowel preparation quality at the time of colonoscopy and monitor procedure completion and need for repeat examinations. Common exclusions include major abdominal surgery, suspected GI obstruction, swallowing or communication disorders, significant heart or kidney failure, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults scheduled for outpatient colonoscopy who have never had a colonoscopy and who (or a household member) can use a smartphone app are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients with major abdominal surgery, suspected gastrointestinal obstruction, impaired swallowing, mental disorder or communication difficulties, congestive heart or kidney failure, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding may not benefit or will be excluded.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, video education could reduce inadequate bowel preparations, lower the number of repeat procedures, and improve detection of precancerous lesions.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have generally shown that video-based education can improve bowel preparation compared with written or verbal instructions, although results vary by setting and delivery.
