Using visual stimulation to improve attention in patients with hemineglect

Application of Optokinetic Stimulation in the Treatment of Hemineglect

NA · University of Salamanca · NCT04663646

What this trial studies

This study investigates the effects of optokinetic stimulation (OKS) on patients suffering from hemineglect, a condition often resulting from a right stroke that impairs attention to the left side of their environment. The approach involves creating an illusory movement to the left, aiming to enhance the patients' awareness and engagement with their neglected side. Participants will receive either the active OKS treatment or a placebo to assess the impact on their balance, posture, spatial representation, and movement disorders. The study seeks to clarify the optimal parameters for applying this therapy effectively.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who have experienced a right stroke and exhibit left hemineglect.

Not a fit: Patients who have communication issues or uncontrolled seizures or migraines may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could significantly improve the quality of life for patients with hemineglect by enhancing their attention and participation in daily activities.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of optokinetic stimulation is being explored, this specific application for hemineglect is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
