Using ultrasound to measure optic nerve sheath diameter for detecting high intracranial pressure

Ultrasonography of Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter for Noninvasive Detection of Raised Intracranial Pressure: a Chinese Multicenter Study

Observational The First Hospital of Jilin University · NCT04981548

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to establish the normal range of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) in a Chinese population and to evaluate its effectiveness in diagnosing raised intracranial pressure. It will involve a large multi-center sample size, comparing data from patients with high intracranial pressure to those with normal levels. The study will analyze the correlation between ONSD measurements and intracranial pressure levels, utilizing transcranial Doppler parameters and baseline data. No interventions will be administered, as the focus is on observational data collection.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals requiring lumbar puncture testing due to conditions like brain trauma, infections, vascular diseases, or tumors, as well as healthy individuals for comparison.

Not a fit: Patients with eye diseases or those who cannot provide informed consent may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a noninvasive method for early detection of raised intracranial pressure, improving patient outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using ONSD measurements for assessing intracranial pressure, indicating that this approach is supported by existing research.
