Using transthoracic echocardiography to improve care for stable chest pain
Improving the Clinical Management of Stable Chest Pain Based on Imaging: a Registry of Transthorcic Echocardiography
This project will test whether adding transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) helps doctors make better decisions and lowers major heart problems in adults with stable chest pain suspected to be from coronary artery disease.

What this trial studies
This is a prospective observational study enrolling adults referred for TTE to evaluate stable chest pain suspected of obstructive coronary artery disease. All participants receive TTE performed according to guidelines and local protocols, and their subsequent clinical decisions and outcomes are tracked. The study will compare rates of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and the use of downstream tests and interventions among patients managed with TTE information. Findings will show whether TTE-based imaging contributes meaningful additional information for clinical management.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (≥18 years) with symptomatic stable chest pain referred for TTE because their doctors suspect obstructive coronary artery disease, who can give informed consent and do not have prior coronary disease or other excluded cardiac conditions.
Not a fit: People with acute coronary syndromes, prior coronary disease or revascularization, non-sinus rhythm, cardiomyopathy, significant valvular or congenital heart disease, or heart failure from other causes are excluded and would not be expected to benefit from this TTE-based approach in this protocol.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, using TTE could reduce major adverse cardiac events and decrease unnecessary invasive tests by improving diagnostic and treatment decisions for people with stable chest pain.
How similar studies have performed: Transthoracic echocardiography is well established for assessing cardiac structure and function, but using routine TTE specifically to guide management of stable chest pain is relatively novel and has limited direct evidence.
