Using the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric to score physical therapy simulation performance

Reliability and Feasibility of the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric Adapted for Physical Therapy (LCJR-PT) to Evaluate Clinical Judgment During Standardized Simulation Experiences in Doctor of Physical Therapy Students

Youngstown State University · NCT07449026

What this trial studies

The Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric was adapted for physical therapy (LCJR-PT) to map Tanner's noticing, interpreting, responding, and reflecting domains to DPT student performance. First- and second-year DPT students at Youngstown State University complete a scripted 30–35 minute acute care simulation that is video-recorded and followed by a brief reflection. Three to five trained faculty raters independently score each recording after standardized training, practice scoring, and calibration discussion. Primary outcomes are intraclass correlation coefficients for total and domain scores, with secondary outcomes including average rater scoring time and faculty perceptions of usability collected via questionnaire.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are first- and second-year DPT students enrolled at Youngstown State University who consent to participate, along with full-time YSU DPT faculty willing to undergo rater training.

Not a fit: Students from other programs, later-year trainees, or anyone who does not consent will not directly benefit from participating.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the LCJR-PT could provide educators a reliable, practical tool to standardize feedback and measure DPT students' clinical judgment during simulations.

How similar studies have performed: The original Lasater rubric has demonstrated reliability in nursing education, but adaptations explicitly validated in physical therapy student simulation are limited, making this application relatively novel.
