What this trial studies
This pilot study aims to enhance lung cancer screening uptake by utilizing an Electronic Health Record-embedded Social Determinants of Health screening tool in the Emergency Department. It will first assess the reach of this approach in identifying eligible patients for lung screening. Following this, a pilot trial will evaluate the effectiveness of a tailored intervention compared to standard care, focusing on factors that influence lung screening uptake such as health literacy and stigma. The study employs quantitative methods, including a Randomized Controlled Trial design and analysis of EHR data.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 50 to 80 who currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years and have never undergone lung cancer screening.
Not a fit: Patients diagnosed with lung cancer or those who have previously had a lung cancer screening will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly increase lung cancer screening rates among high-risk populations.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using non-traditional settings for health interventions, suggesting potential success for this approach.
