Using technology to improve patient handling for healthcare workers
Does Proper Patient Handling Technique, Coupled With New Technology, Help Reduce Musculoskeletal Demands of Health Care Workers
NA · University of New Brunswick · NCT06285786
This study is testing if using special technology can help healthcare workers move patients more easily and safely, so they have less risk of getting hurt on the job.

What this trial studies
This project investigates the use of the Vendlet system on Span-America Medical Systems beds to reduce the physical strain on healthcare providers during patient handling tasks. It aims to assess the biomechanical demands of various patient handling techniques, comparing those performed with and without assistive technology. The study will also evaluate the impact of ergonomic training on improving movement patterns and reducing injury risk. By building complex movement models and assessing joint stresses, the research seeks to provide evidence for the technology's effectiveness in preventing work-related injuries.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are healthcare workers with no recent history of pain or injury in the low back or shoulder regions.
Not a fit: Patients who have previously received training on proper patient handling techniques may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries among healthcare workers.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using assistive technology to reduce injury risk in healthcare settings, making this approach promising.
