Using Silodosin to Improve Ureteral Access for Kidney Stone Surgery
Effect of Preoperative Silodosin on Feasibility of Ureteral Access Sheath Insertion for Flexible Ureteroscope in Treating Renal Stones; A Prospective, Multicentre, Randomized Trial
This study is testing if a medication called silodosin can make it easier and safer for patients with kidney stones to have surgery by reducing muscle spasms in the ureters.

What this trial studies
This study investigates the effect of preoperative silodosin, an α1A adrenoceptor antagonist, on the feasibility of inserting a ureteral access sheath during flexible ureteroscopy for patients with renal stones. The aim is to determine if silodosin can reduce ureteral spasms and intraureteral pressure, thereby facilitating easier and safer access to the ureters. By potentially replacing the need for preoperative stenting, this approach may enhance surgical outcomes and reduce postoperative pain. The study will involve patients scheduled for flexible ureteroscopy who meet the inclusion criteria.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults with renal stones who are scheduled for flexible ureteroscopy and require ureteral access sheath insertion.
Not a fit: Patients under 18 years of age will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to safer and more effective kidney stone surgeries with reduced postoperative complications.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of α1-blockers in urology is established, this specific application of silodosin for ureteral access sheath insertion is novel and has not been extensively tested.
