Using shockwave therapy to help heal fractured jaws

The Impact of Using Extracorporeal Radial Shock Wave Therapy as an Adjuvant Therapy vs Conventional Open Reduction and Internal Fixation With No Adjuvant Therapy on Bone Healing for Patients With Mandibular Parasymphyseal, Body and Angle Fractures

What this trial studies

This study investigates the effectiveness of extracorporeal radial shockwave therapy as an additional treatment to standard surgical fixation methods for fractured mandibles. Patients undergoing surgery for fresh mandibular fractures will be divided into two groups: one receiving only the standard treatment and the other receiving shockwave therapy starting three days post-surgery. Follow-up evaluations will be conducted using cone beam computed tomography to assess bone healing at the fracture site at one and four months post-operation. The goal is to determine if shockwave therapy can accelerate the healing process compared to traditional methods.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18-75 with fresh mandibular fractures occurring within the last five days.

Not a fit: Patients with systemic conditions affecting bone healing or those who have had previous surgeries on the mandible may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly enhance the healing process for patients with mandibular fractures.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of shockwave therapy in bone healing is promising, this specific application for mandibular fractures is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.

Eligibility criteria
