What this trial studies

This study aims to test a new method for reducing heavy alcohol consumption by utilizing motivational interviewing techniques combined with personalized self-talk videos. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: an assessment-only control group, a standard motivational interviewing group, or a group that creates a self-talk video. The video group will develop a personalized video addressing their future self, outlining their motivations and commitment to reducing alcohol use. This approach is designed to enhance motivation and support behavior change over time.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who meet the criteria for heavy drinking as defined by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Not a fit: Patients who do not meet the criteria for heavy drinking or lack access to the necessary technology may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide a novel and effective tool for individuals seeking to reduce their alcohol consumption.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific combination of motivational interviewing and self-talk videos is novel, similar motivational approaches have shown promise in other studies.
