What this trial studies
This pilot study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a virtually delivered prenatal yoga intervention designed to prevent postpartum depression (PPD) among at-risk women. The study consists of two phases: the first phase assesses the facilitators and barriers to implementing the intervention among various stakeholders, while the second phase involves an 8-session pilot randomized controlled trial to determine the feasibility and acceptability of the yoga program. The intervention targets pregnant women with a history of depression, leveraging the benefits of mindfulness and physical activity associated with yoga.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are pregnant women aged 18 and older, between 8-28 weeks gestation, with a history of depression, and receiving prenatal care at Henry Ford Health.
Not a fit: Patients who are not fluent in English or have been advised by a physician against participating in exercise may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly reduce the incidence of postpartum depression among at-risk women.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that yoga interventions during pregnancy can improve depressive symptoms, but this specific preventive approach is novel.
