Using Platelet Rich Fibrin to Help Bone Healing in Smokers

Platelet Rich Fibrin as a Modulator of the Wound Healing Response in Smokers

Not applicable Interventional Universidad de los Andes, Chile · NCT06190860

What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates the effects of leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) on bone healing in smokers who require tooth extractions and subsequent implant rehabilitation. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either L-PRF treatment or standard care after a thorough evaluation, including clinical examinations and radiographic assessments. The study aims to determine if L-PRF can enhance alveolar ridge preservation in smokers, a group known to experience impaired healing. The trial will be conducted at two dental institutions in Santiago, Chile, following ethical guidelines.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are smokers who have been smoking at least five cigarettes a day for over a year and require tooth extractions with plans for implant rehabilitation.

Not a fit: Patients who are pregnant, taking immunosuppressive or anticoagulant medications, or have altered coagulation parameters may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could improve bone healing outcomes for smokers undergoing dental procedures.

How similar studies have performed: While L-PRF has shown promise in non-smokers, evidence regarding its efficacy in smokers is limited, making this approach relatively novel.
