What this trial studies
This observational study aims to determine if the Sit to Stand Test and Gait Speed Test can aid physiotherapists in making discharge planning decisions for older adults admitted to acute hospitals. Given the high rates of hospitalization among older adults, particularly due to falls and related injuries, the study focuses on assessing functional status changes post-admission. By evaluating physical outcomes, the study seeks to ensure that caregivers are adequately prepared to support older adults after discharge. The methodology involves measuring the physical capabilities of participants to inform discharge recommendations.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are older adults aged 65 years and older who can ambulate independently or with walking aids.
Not a fit: Patients admitted for acute orthopedic or neurological conditions that impair functional mobility may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance discharge planning for older adults, leading to better recovery outcomes and reduced readmission rates.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown that physical outcome measures can effectively inform discharge planning, suggesting a promising approach in this context.
