Using pedal pump therapy for leg lymphedema in older adults
Effectiveness of the Osteopathic Pedal Pump in Reducing Lower Limb Volume in Older Adults with Chronic Leg Lymphedema
This study is testing whether a new pedal pump therapy can help older adults with leg swelling from lymphedema feel better by moving fluid more effectively.

What this trial studies
This study investigates the effectiveness of the osteopathic pedal pump as a manual treatment for chronic lymphedema in the lower extremities of older adults. Unlike traditional compressive therapies, which can be uncomfortable and have limited benefits, the pedal pump employs a rhythmic motion to facilitate fluid movement back into the circulatory system. The primary outcome measure will be the reduction in leg volume, assessed through water displacement techniques. The study aims to provide evidence for a potentially more tolerable and effective treatment option for this common condition.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 55 and older who have been diagnosed with lower leg lymphedema.
Not a fit: Patients with acute medical issues, chronic conditions, or active infections in the lower limb may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could offer a more effective and comfortable option for managing chronic lymphedema in older adults.
How similar studies have performed: While the pedal pump approach is relatively novel, existing anecdotal evidence suggests potential benefits, but formal studies are limited.
