Using optic nerve head strain to predict glaucoma progression

Optic Nerve Head Strain as Biomarker for Glaucoma

Not applicable Interventional Johns Hopkins University · NCT06240312

What this trial studies

This study aims to evaluate whether images of the optic nerve head taken at two different eye pressures can provide strain estimates that predict the progression of glaucoma. Existing glaucoma patients and suitable control adults will undergo imaging using an FDA-approved optical coherence tomography instrument. The biomechanical strain estimates obtained will be compared to visual field and retinal nerve fiber layer measurements over time. The goal is to establish a biomarker that correlates baseline strain and its changes with the rate of glaucoma damage progression.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are existing glaucoma patients receiving care at Johns Hopkins.

Not a fit: Patients who are unable to perform imaging, illiterate, hearing impaired, or non-English speakers may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a new biomarker for predicting glaucoma progression, allowing for earlier and more tailored interventions.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using biomechanical strain as a biomarker is innovative, similar studies have not been widely reported, making this a novel investigation.
