What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an enhanced eIntervention for individuals with moderate to high-risk substance use disorders in a primary care setting. Participants will be recruited from Western Michigan and will receive either the enhanced eIntervention or standard treatment as usual (TAU) alongside the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) approach. The study will measure the reduction in substance use and increased enrollment in treatment among participants using validated assessment tools. The trial will involve randomizing 200 individuals who screen positive for substance use issues.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and over who are receiving primary care at Western Michigan and have a substance-specific NIDA Modified Assist score of 27 or greater.
Not a fit: Patients who are non-English speaking, unable to read at a 3rd grade level, currently participating in addiction treatment, or deemed psychiatrically or medically unstable may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to more effective interventions for individuals struggling with substance use disorders, improving their chances of recovery.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using technology-based interventions for substance use disorders, indicating that this approach may be effective.
