Using magnetomotoric ultrasound to improve diagnosis in rectal cancer
Magnetomotoric Ultrasound (MMUS) in the Staging of Rectal Cancer
This study is testing a new type of ultrasound that uses magnets to see if it can help doctors find cancer in lymph nodes better in patients with rectal cancer.

What this trial studies
This study investigates the use of magnetomotoric ultrasound, which combines traditional ultrasound with a time-varying magnetic field, to enhance the diagnosis of mesorectal lymph nodes in patients with rectal cancer. Patients will receive an injection of nanoparticles near the rectal cancer, which will migrate to adjacent lymph nodes. The magnetic field will then be applied to improve the detection of affected lymph nodes, with results compared to MRI and final histopathology. The goal is to provide a more accurate diagnostic tool for rectal cancer staging.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients diagnosed with rectal cancer who are scheduled for total mesorectal surgery.
Not a fit: Patients who are unable to provide informed consent or have synchronous colorectal cancer may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to improved diagnostic accuracy for lymph node involvement in rectal cancer, potentially guiding better treatment decisions.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of magnetomotoric ultrasound is novel, similar imaging techniques have shown promise in enhancing cancer diagnostics.
