What this trial studies
This study investigates the effects of krill oil on muscle weakness in individuals aged 40 and older with type 2 diabetes. It aims to address sarcopenia, a condition characterized by the loss of muscle mass and function, which is prevalent among this population. Participants will receive either krill oil or vegetable oil to assess improvements in muscle strength and function. The study is crucial as it seeks to develop nutritional therapies that could enhance the quality of life for older adults with diabetes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 40 and older with physician-confirmed type 2 diabetes and muscle weakness.
Not a fit: Patients with a BMI of 45 or higher, severe hypertension, or those with certain medical conditions may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved muscle strength and overall quality of life for older adults with type 2 diabetes.
How similar studies have performed: While there is some epidemiological evidence supporting the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids on muscle function, this specific approach using krill oil is relatively novel.
