Using ischemic postconditioning during carotid surgery
Ischemic Postconditioning in Prevention of Brain Damage After Carotid Surgery - a Clinical Trial for Vascular Evaluation
NA · Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases Dedinje · NCT06359756
This study is testing if a special technique used during carotid surgery can help keep patients safer and improve their recovery by monitoring brain health and reducing the risk of strokes.

What this trial studies
This study investigates the effects of ischemic postconditioning during eversion carotid endarterectomy to enhance patient safety and outcomes. It focuses on monitoring cerebral oximetry, transcranial Doppler, and biomarkers related to neuronal ischemic injury and blood-brain barrier integrity. By distinguishing between intraprocedural and postprocedural strokes, the study aims to identify risk factors and improve surgical techniques to reduce complications associated with carotid artery diseases.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients with unilateral carotid artery stenosis greater than 90% or bilateral stenosis greater than 80%.
Not a fit: Patients requiring urgent carotid endarterectomy or those with significant comorbidities such as malignant diseases or recent major surgery may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce the incidence of stroke and improve recovery outcomes for patients undergoing carotid surgery.
How similar studies have performed: While ischemic postconditioning is a relatively novel approach in this context, similar studies have shown promise in reducing complications in other surgical settings.
