What this trial studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of Insulin Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) in promoting bone regeneration in patients with intrabony periodontal defects. Participants will be divided into two groups: one receiving IGF-1 gel combined with hydroxyapatite, and the other receiving only hydroxyapatite. The study will assess clinical outcomes and radiographic changes to determine the efficacy of IGF-1 in enhancing bone healing. The methodology includes flap reflection, degranulation, and placement of the treatment in the defect site.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are systemically healthy adults over 18 years with specific types of intrabony defects and probing pocket depths greater than 5mm.

Not a fit: Patients who are medically compromised, pregnant, heavy smokers, or have undergone radiotherapy or chemotherapy may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could significantly enhance bone regeneration in patients with periodontal defects, leading to improved dental health.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of IGF-1 in bone regeneration is promising, this specific approach in periodontal defects is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
