Using HEPA air purifiers to improve indoor air quality in rural Alaska homes
The Clean Air Study: High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Purifiers to Improve Indoor Air Quality and Health in Rural Alaska Homes

What this trial studies
This study focuses on improving indoor air quality in homes of Alaska Native children in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, where poor air quality is linked to respiratory diseases. Participants will use HEPA air purifiers to reduce particulate matter (PM2.5) in their homes, which is often elevated due to wood stove use and tobacco smoke. Families will monitor their child's respiratory symptoms weekly over a 12-week period while using the air purifiers. The goal is to assess the impact of improved air quality on the health of these children.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are Alaska Native families residing in homes that use woodstoves for heating or have tobacco smokers present.
Not a fit: Patients who plan to move during the study period or already use HEPA air purifiers will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to significant improvements in respiratory health for children living in homes with poor air quality.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that HEPA air purifiers can effectively reduce indoor air pollution, suggesting potential success for this approach.
