Using gastric ultrasound to improve airway management in patients on GLP-1 medications
Gastric POCUS for Airway Management in Patients Using Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist (Multicentric)
This study is testing if using ultrasound to check stomach contents can help doctors manage the airways of patients on GLP-1 medications before surgery to lower the risk of aspiration pneumonia.

What this trial studies
This observational study investigates the use of gastric ultrasonography performed by trained anesthesiologists to assess gastric content in patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonists prior to scheduled surgery. The aim is to determine if this technique can help make informed clinical decisions regarding airway management and reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia. Eligible participants include adults over 18 years who are undergoing surgery after a fasting period of 6 to 8 hours. The study will exclude individuals with certain gastrointestinal conditions or those on medications that affect gastric emptying.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years taking GLP-1 analog medications and classified as ASA I-III.
Not a fit: Patients with a history of esophagogastric pathology, previous abdominal surgery, or those on medications affecting gastric emptying may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could enhance patient safety by reducing the risk of aspiration pneumonia during surgery.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of gastric ultrasound in this context is relatively novel, similar studies have shown promise in improving airway management outcomes.
