What this trial studies

This observational study evaluates the effectiveness of standard fasting protocols for patients undergoing fracture surgery by using bedside gastric ultrasound to measure gastric volume and content. It aims to identify patients at risk of aspiration due to delayed gastric emptying, particularly those with specific conditions such as gastrointestinal disorders or trauma. The study focuses on patients classified as ASA Physical Status I to III and seeks to standardize the use of gastric ultrasound in preoperative assessments. By doing so, it hopes to improve patient safety and outcomes during surgery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients classified as ASA Physical Status I to III who require surgery after a traumatic fracture.

Not a fit: Patients with a body mass index over 35 or those with conditions leading to gastroparesis or other gastrointestinal disorders may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia in patients undergoing fracture surgery.

How similar studies have performed: While recent studies have explored gastric ultrasound in various contexts, this specific application in fracture surgery is novel and has not been previously evaluated.
