What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate the relationship between the orientation of the gallbladder infundibulum and the successful identification of the cystic duct during laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with gallstone disease. A total of 196 patients will be enrolled over one year at Nepal Mediciti Hospital, where their infundibulum positions will be classified based on a clock face model. The study will collect data on patient demographics, surgical outcomes, and postoperative complications to assess the impact of infundibulum orientation on surgical success and safety. Ethical considerations will ensure patient confidentiality throughout the study.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 18 years old undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstone disease.

Not a fit: Patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy for carcinoma of the gallbladder will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved techniques for identifying the cystic duct, thereby reducing the risk of bile duct injuries during laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been various techniques developed to prevent bile duct injuries, this specific approach focusing on infundibulum orientation is novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
