Using functional MRI to assess recovery in patients with optic neuritis

RESting-state Functional MRI in Patients With Optic Neuritis for ANticipation of reCovEry

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the brain's resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) in patients diagnosed with optic neuritis. Participants will undergo a multi-parametric MRI, including an additional resting-state fMRI sequence before receiving a gadolinium contrast agent. Alongside the MRI, patients will have a consultation with an ophthalmologist, which includes visual acuity tests and optical coherence tomography. The study seeks to gather data that may help anticipate recovery outcomes for these patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years old with a clinical suspicion of optic neuritis who require an MRI for diagnosis.

Not a fit: Patients with contraindications to MRI, such as pregnant or breastfeeding women, or those with pre-existing vision impairments may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the understanding of recovery patterns in optic neuritis, potentially leading to improved patient management.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of fMRI in assessing neurological conditions is established, this specific application in optic neuritis is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
